Service Ministry
Grace Church is constantly engaged in the work of Missions both locally and globally. Each year the congregation supports many different missions projects through the work of the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference, direct support to missionaries around the world, and contributions to a variety of local and global agencies which help persons in need. By serving others, we grow together as a church family and closer to God. Whether traveling, power tools, school service, walking, fundraising, or clean-up is your niche, many opportunities to serve are available here at Grace Church. Check out our current service ministries below and contact the church office for more information about how to get involved.

VIM TeamThe Volunteers in Mission team (VIM) provides a week of service to local and out-of-state projects on an annual basis. Since 2000 our VIM Team has spent one week each summer serving the Bennett Center in London, Kentucky, the Robeson County Church and Community Center in Lumberton, NC., and recently in Oak Hill, WV. In each of these locations, our workers have built wheelchair ramps, performed exterior house repairs including roof and front porch repairs, installed a new kitchen, provided interior framing for a new community center, and designed and painted a mural for a child care room within a new community center. In some years, the team works locally in Harford County with projects at Grace Church and partnering with Habitat for Humanity.

Parish Nurse:
|
My calling to GUMC as its first Parish Nurse happened November 1999. After completing early education classes at St. Joseph's Hospital, networking with other nurses there and in Harford County, learning the scope and standards of parish nurse practice from the Maryland Board of Nursing, obtaining a yearly RN license from them and keeping one in Vermont, and buying my own liability insurance, I was ready to start 24/7. I use the booklet written by Reverend Granger Westburg, a Lutheran minister, who started this ministry in the early 1970's. He believed "the presence of a parish nurse through all of life's stages offers an opportunity for intentional health." We are trained in holistic ministry. I began with an assessment of the ongoing health care already in motion by parishioners in this supportive and caring church. Open arms welcomed me into every group. My goals are to be an active listener of needs, to offer creative suggestions so that persons may maintain their own control over their health, to offer forums for learning, and to represent Grace Church wherever I happen to find myself. I am prepared to minister to body and spirit. I will continue to upgrade new self-learning to keep effective.
